L7 at No Values Festival and Jennifer Finch Photos

    Hello All!

In conjunction with the NO VALUES Festival, I have created a limited edition (50) photozine of 10 images of bands that I photographed at the festival. Below is the text printed in the ‘zine and the images I chose.

The fanzine will be available for $25 at the Punk Rock and Paintbrushes booth. @punkrockandpaintbrushes

    “No Values”

“NO VALUES: Select Images From the Collection of JENNIFER FINCH

My name is Jennifer Finch, and before I joined the band L7 in 1986. I was bopping around the Southern California punk, art, and queer scenes, with photography and image capture being my passion. It is without any loss of immense honor that I recognize the incredible rarity and significance of many of us being together (including you, dearest reader) to play the No Values festival. With that in mind, I want to pull together some images from my archives in tribute to these musicians and the moments that we shared.

The photographs within these pages capture seminal performances from bands that have not only defined the punk genre but have also continued to influence music and culture for decades. My work features icons like Black Flag, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, The Vandals, The Damned, Suicidal Tendencies, L7, Adolescents, Sublime, Dead Kennedys, and many more.

These images reflect back to a moment in time when these artists were breaking ground and radiating raw, unbridled energy that was just beginning to coalesce. This potent energy, much like the initial spark in a chain reaction, would fuel an explosive movement. Reverberating through time and shaping, weaving and tearing at the very fabric culture.

However, as a photographer, I am conflicted about sharing these works. Particularly when it is in the context of how these artists show up in the present. The passage of time brings about inevitable comparisons between our younger selves and our current incarnations. Moreover, these photographs, taken in the intensity of their formative years, starkly contrast with their present-day personas and performances. This dichotomy raises compelling questions about authenticity, evolution, and the preservation of punk’s raw ethos.

Additionally, these images, we must also consider broader issues in media and cultural production. How does the documentation of a subculture affect its narrative? Does preserving these raw, youthful moments overshadow or diminish the value of the artists’ evolution and maturity? Furthermore, the intersection of nostalgia and commercialism within punk rock poses a paradox. Can punk remain a rebellion to capitalistist dominance when it is so heavily archived and commodified?

This fanzine not only pays homage to the indelible impact these bands have had on the punk scene but also invites reflection on the complexities of growth, change, and the enduring power of music to transcend generations. However, as you flip through these pages, may you feel that energy of the past and appreciate the journey of punk rock from its messy roots to its influential present.

It blows me away that I will be sharing the stage today with so many of those I grew up with and photographed. It is almost unbelievable and it is my hope if you picked up this work at the No Values festival

you, too, had a killer day basking
    in the weird, strange world
    we all live in together.

    Enjoy.
    Jennifer Finch

  • 2024 L7 May Daze Review

    2024 L7 May Daze Review

Our last tour through May 2024, “L7 May Daze Tour,” was an absolute blast, filled with unforgettable moments and incredible music. We had the pleasure of sharing the stage with our longtime friend Gina Volpe from The Lunachicks and fantastic bands like Thema and the Sleaze and Cumgirl8. Each performance was electric, and seeing so many passionate fans at every venue was amazing. We kicked things off in Atlanta, GA, at Center Stage with Cumgirl8, then rocked the “Welcome To Rockville” festival in Daytona, FL, followed by an energetic show at The Canal Club in Richmond, VA, with Gina Volpe.

Highlights included reconnecting with friends in Gwar in Richmond, fun photo sessions with CumGirl8 and Thema and the Sleaze (we expected big things from these talented women), and what will now be referred to as “the wax lips” photos with Gina Volpe. Gina is our dear friend from our sister band, “The Lunachicks.”

The journey continued with a vibrant performance at the Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte, NC, where Thema and the Sleeze joined us for an unforgettable night. We then headed up north, playing at Empire Live in Albany, NY, and Electric City in Buffalo, NY, both with Gina Volpe, bringing a powerful mix of rock and camaraderie. Our stop in Lititz, PA, at Mickey’s Black Box was special, as we shared the stage with Anthrophobia. The Sonic Temple festival in Columbus, OH, brought the tour to a thrilling conclusion, with countless other talented bands and enthusiastic fans surrounding us.

    Memorable Moments

Beyond the music, memorable encounters and collaborations filled the tour. “Welcome To Rockville” and “Sonic Temple” were highlighted for the large crowds and the chance to reconnect with old friends like Red Fang, Helmet, and Cypress Hill.

One of the most exciting moments was when I sang a song with the band Crobot, a phenomenal band from Pennsylvania, and CKY, featuring my friends Ronnie James from The Shocker, Chad I Ginsburg, and Jesse Margera. Moreover, this tour celebrated music, friendship, and our unbreakable bond with our fans and fellow musicians.

However, as always it is such a pleasure and honor to be on the stage with my bandmates, Dee Plakas, Suzi Gardner and Donita Sparks. Also to share all the excitement and even the quiet moments that can happen on those long drives, cracking each other up and telling stories.

L7 May Daze 2024 Tour – The Press IS In!

“L7, hailing from California and playing grungy punk-rock, stopped at Sonic Temple amidst an ongoing tour. The sheer swagger on stage was daunting as Finch and the rest of the quartet dug their heels in and began to prove why the band remains relevant after all this time.” (Metal Injection)

All of this, along with consistent touring, has made two things very clear: L7 isn’t going anywhere, and we need their righteous fury and snarky edge now more than ever.” (NPR)

The 22-song, 95-minute set was bursting with vigor and an incredible amount of swagger.” (Times Union)

No matter the musical genre you try to label L7 with — grunge, punk rock, alternative metal — it really doesn’t matter, and the truth is they are just four ladies that can still kick ass and melt faces with their decades-long catalog of tunes.” (All Music Magazine)

“LA Punk rock legends L7! came to the Canal Club to kick ass and take names!”” (Digital Beat Magazine)

Reading through the reviews of L7’s “May Daze Tour” has been gratifying with the kind words and descriptive commentary about each show. I can’t help but feel a surge of pride and gratitude with each glowing comment. Fans have been raving about our energy on stage and the raw, unfiltered power that defines L7. It’s amazing to see how L7’s music still resonates with people, old fans and new ones alike. From the moment we step on stage to the last chord we play, the connection with the audience is electric. The feedback confirms what we feel every night on tour – that punk rock is STILL very much alive, kicking, and here to stay!

    Reading through the reviews

One thing that stands out in these reviews is the appreciation for our setlist. We’ve been digging deep into our discography, mixing the classic hits from our first records with some of the newer tracks off Scatter The Rats. Fans have been thrilled to hear songs they grew up with, and it’s been equally rewarding for us to see how our newer material is being embraced.

I’m stoked about the cross-generational aspect we’ve seen at L7 shows with long-time L7 fans, now parents bringing their kids to their first L7 show, and the opening bands talking about how much L7’s music has influenced their creativity. The energy in the venues has been palpable, with mosh pits erupting and fans singing along at the top of their lungs. The reviews have highlighted not just our performance but also the communal experience of the shows – the sense of unity and rebellion that’s defined an L7 gig throughout our career.

    FEEDBACK

The positive feedback has also got me thinking about the future of L7. The enthusiasm I see every night from the crowd is what makes us excited about what lies ahead for the band. We’ve always been about more than just the music; it’s about making a statement and connecting with people on a deeper level. Knowing that our fans are still with us and that new generations are discovering our music fills me with a sense of purpose. We’re more inspired than ever to keep pushing boundaries and delivering the kind of raw, unapologetic rock that people expect from us.
